While much of the contemporary view of fairies as gentle, benevolent beings was molded by current popular literature and movies such as those by Disney, there is one Disney movie that scared the pants off me as a child, along with those of most of the kids I knew. This blood-curdler was called Darby O'Gill and the Little People.

I knew kids who actually walked (or ran) out of the theater before the movie ended. Admittedly this was pre-The Exorcist and the kind of computer animations and in-your-face blood-and-gore special effects that are both possible and prevalent today, and TV and movies hadn't yet made us quite as jaded and hard-nosed as we've all now become -- children and adults alike. The special effects were still pretty amazing, though.

I think your children would enjoy this movie, even if they don't run out screaming. And -- as a bonus, you can see Sean Connery (with hair!) in one of his earliest movie roles! It is available on DVD.
